A BESPOKE CREATIVE CURRICULUM
At Riverside, every student has the opportunity to engage with a comprehensive arts education program led by experienced and qualified staff.
All our young people get a well rounded education that is tailored to their needs beginning with their EHCP, the wide range of ability of our student co-hort demands a creative and student centred approach.
Teams 1 & 2, consisting of students with autism, GLD, SLD, and MLD, focus on skill development and conceptual understanding across various art forms. Beginning in Key Stage 3, pupils explore the fundamentals of art, music, dance, and drama, gaining confidence through learning, performing, and sharing their work.
They are encouraged to develop their preferences and research skills. As they progress to Key Stage 4, students are encouraged to cultivate independence and develop skills applicable to adult life. Throughout all key stages, students are encouraged to explore the arts through visits to venues, performing, exhibiting their work, and pursuing personal interests, culminating in accreditation from bodies like NCFE, Arts Award, or ASDAN.
Teams 3 & 4 (Autism, SLD, PMLD) focus on learning through the sensory and interactive qualities the Arts can offer Pupils in KS3 access the Arts through specially devised sessions led by practitioners experienced in facilitating creative work with these groups of students. This capitalises on the potential to create immersive environments that draw on practices involved in Art, Music, Dance & Drama - in which students can interact with stimuli; whether through creative movement, play, mark making or sound and rhythm.
In KS4, students have individualised learning goals based around their special interests, motivators and areas highlighted for development. These might include: learning independence skills through arts activities accessed in the community; learning about their bodies through dance/movement; engaging with art materials and art making; developing their focus, engagement and interaction skills through music making and immersive, multi-sensory experiences.
In Team 5, art is offered as an optional lesson aligned with a student-centred curriculum. Exceptional art students have dedicated time with qualified teachers to nurture their talents throughout the week.
All students are encouraged to pursue their interests and projects.
Progress in creative arts, as with other subjects at Riverside, is tracked and assessed regularly using a tiered system on the online platform "Solar." Teachers document progress through various means, including photos, film, examples of work, and observations. Students are involved in assessing their progress through plenaries or one-on-one feedback sessions. Annual reports issued at the end of the summer term include summaries of topics covered, progress made, and anticipated next steps. Additionally, parent evenings are held twice a year to facilitate face-to-face meetings between families and staff.
